Love the Little Things

Something that I find so beautiful about human nature is our capacity for love.

A lot of times this is showcased in the grand gestures: surprise birthday parties, Disneyland proposals, wedding vows, you name it. And although those things are so special, it’s the little moments in life that I’ve learned have the most intrinsic value.

We live In a world consumed by our screens. Where the hours spent on social media teach us only how to compare ourselves to others and find ways to get ahead in life. We are constantly funneling information that creates hate and division instead of understanding the unique value of our individuality.

In the midst of all of this, we often forget to appreciate these irreplaceable and loving moments.

These are the things that don’t go unnoticed, but go unspoken. Usually the small acts of service to a partner or the random acts of kindness between strangers leave us speechless for the love we have for each other.

In the spirit of Valentines day, I found time to reflect on what I love. So rather than share stories, I thought today I would remind you how beautiful life is.

These are the little things I love:

  1. Blue sky days in winter. Where it is sunny enough for sunglasses and the sunroof open, but the heater has to be on full blast.

  2. When my closet has just the right amount of hangers to hang up my clothes on laundry day.

    1. Actually having the motivation to hang up my clothes the same day that I wash them

  3. Dusk in my hometown, where the dark sky makes the brightly colored storefronts pop in the last light of day.

  4. Coffee stands. The little banter while you wait for your drink and the smell of the espresso beans wafting into your car. The Pacific Northwest does it right with coffee stands.

  5. FaceTiming my friends. This one is specific, but the other day it was late at night and I was on the phone with my friend and drinking chocolate milk. Not a care in the world. That is awesome.

  6. Familiar faces. Living in a small town warrants a lot of small talk in public. But I also love the mutual smile with an acquaintance where we recognize each other and just continue on with our day.

  7. Excessive texting. Rather than sending a large text with all of the information, I love seeing 12 in a row— it adds dramatic effect.

  8. Reading public Venmo conversations. I can’t be the only one who does this. I love seeing what people are sending each other money for. And usually there is drama in there somewhere so thats an extra perk.

  9. Country. Music. I’ve said it before, and I will certainly say it again. I am a country music girl through and through.

  10. People watching. An older couple chatting over a cup of coffee, two little siblings holding hands walking down the street, friends hugging after having been apart for awhile, etc.

Please take a few moments to think about the things that you love. Make a list in your phone of things you notice that make you smile. I swear it will make your day.

And don’t just take it from me. Everyone has little moments that they love. I took the liberty of asking some of my friends what random things they love. And the answers certainly didn’t disappoint.

Here’s what they have to say:

I hope you had the sweetest Valentines Day with the ones you love! Don’t get too caught up in waiting around for big moments and grand gestures, there is so much to fall in love with in the little things.

XOXO
